Landscape painting - abstract art
Isn’t it funny how something said in a
casual way can lead to something unexpected. I was talking to a friend a few
weeks ago about art and not being a particularly interested in it he did say how
he liked landscape painting.
I reflected on this and remembered the satisfaction and enjoyment I had when I
used to go out in the countryside in Scotland and paint directly from the
landscape.
I would pack my bag with paints and my little portable stool, drive to a
location and then trek around looking for an interesting view. A hot flask of
tea and some sandwiches always helped to keep out the cold and wind and I could
easily get lost in the painting
process and lose all track of time.
Well, after talking to my friend I
decided it was time to return to landscape but this time to try to give it an
edge. I’m now working on several paintings which began “en plein air” and which
I have worked on back in the studio. I’ll be posting them on the website soon so
look out for them within the next couple of weeks!

Painting and Kassel
The city of Kassel has the flair of a real metropolis at the moment on account of the famous 5 yearly “Documenta” exhibition. This is the 12th show, having started after the 2nd World War as a response to the censorship of the Nazi’s who were against all of the modern movements in art. It was started by an artist and architect named Arnold Bode and has featured the great and the good of the art world since it’s inception in the 1950’s. Among the artists who have taken part are Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys and Richard Hamilton. A new curator is invited to co-ordinate the exhibition and chooses work according to their own particular theme and the whole exhibition, which is set in various locations throughout Kassel, lasts 100 days. Most of the art is intentionally challenging and it really is necessary to have a guide, in person or audio, to help in understanding the work.
